Our local school board member Penny Blue wrote a book honoring her father who lived for 99 years, most of them under Jim Crow ‘laws’, teaching his children, by example, how one should behave under unbearable conditions and what one should simply never tolerate. The book outlines historical events and individual occurrences endured by him in an era that should never have been. His grit and determination to raise his family on his own terms is impressive and the legacy he left shows in their character and work ethics. At the age of 95, he had the opportunity to meet then-Senator Barack Obama and I can only imagine the emotions he felt knowing an African-American man was running for President, and the unbelievable joy when he won the election. This book is available through Amazon and we should all be humbled by the life story of Charles Abron Edwards.

In addition to historical facts, a good read of personal experiences of an unusually strong-minded Black man that refused to let racist individuals and institutions grind the self-worth of his family into the dirt. The resistance to the constant attempts to dehumanize him and those like him must have taken a psychological toll - sad and completely unnecessary for ANYONE to experience this. Unfortunately, every white normally fair-minded high school student for the past century has learned from their history books that slavery actually ended in 1865 and blacks have had equal rights ever since thanks to organizations like the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Hey, at least we are not in Africa, right?

This book had just the right amount of Black history, personalization and humor for anyone who wants to see the last 100 years through the real life experiences of an exceptional GRIOT who was able to pass down life lessons still appropriate for the current times. It's really uplifting to see a strong Black man who did not accept 2nd class citizenship when that was the norm for the times. His leadership set the example for his ten children who carry that strength with them today. It would be a great reference for the school system to help put Jim Crow discrimination into context through someone who lived it.... an every day hero!

I read this book for my personal pleasure. I found it to be educational, entertaining and thought provoking. With all that is happening in this country today, this book became a must read for me. It helped me to see that the more things change, the more they stay the same. And, I ask myself what am I going to do about it, how am I going to do it and when am I going to do it? I recommend this book for all who are struggling with how to be equal in America today.

This book held my interest from beginning to end. The stories are engaging, and I can't say enough about the way history is woven in. I will purchase several copies, because my thoughts as soon as I finished the early chapters were: 1) I have several friends who will enjoy this book and 2) School children should read this book.
